Loopeez: Helping Kids with Autism learn to Tie Shoes

At our surprisingly painless IEP meeting last week one of the things that I discussed with my son's OT is that he is struggling with learning how to tie shoes. She has also been working with him on it but he is having a hard time.

My son is 8 years old and in second grade - I refuse to buy velcro or slip-on shoes for him aside from his crocs . I want him to wear sneakers with laces and look like a "big kid". This means, I tie his shoes or he keeps them tied loosely and just slips them on. I want him to do it himself.

I found Loopeez and decided to give this product a try. A pair is just $4.95 and shipping is fast (within days). Over the weekend I plan on putting these on his sneakers and sending the instruction sheet into school on Monday. Today they had a field trip and tomorrow is another off-schedule day so the weekend & next week seems like a good place to start. Hopefully sooner than later Alex will be able to tie his own shoes.

I've also heard good things about Ian's Shoelace Site.

Hope it goes well!

Looks interesting. Personally I've given up for a time and bought velcro Merell tennis shoes... I know this is something we need to start back on though...let us know how Alex likes this!

Please let us know how this goes with Alex. My daughter has the same issue, and I really want her to tie her own shoes too.

I may order these too. The last time we bought shoes for our son, who is 6, we made the sad discovery that there are none with velcro in his size in the shoe store any more.

But he loves the more "big boy" shoes with laces and really wants to learn, just finds it frustrating. These may do the trick! We also still have similar problems with buttons.

I have heard great things about Loopeez at a trade show I attended in New Jersey last year. I decided to try them out with my 4 year old son. After a month of him tying them with the Loopeez, he was then able to tie them without them. Altghough he really insisted on putting the Loopeez back on. He thought they were "cool" because of the baseball on them.
